This article examines the optimal number of insurance companies in Iran, considering economic, demographic, and insurance indicators. The number of insurance companies in different countries remains almost constant over different time periods with a tendency to slightly increase and then slightly decrease. It can be assumed that the number of insurance companies grows in parallel with the development of the insurance market, but on the other hand, due to greater competition and more intense activity in the competitive field, the number of insurance companies changes mainly after mergers and sometimes liquidations. In this study, the optimal number of insurance companies was estimated using data envelopment analysis (DEA) and cointegration vector autoregression (Cointegration VAR) methods in the period 1011-2024. The results of this study showed that the optimal number of insurance companies in Iran was 49, including 5 life insurance companies, 10 reinsurance companies, and 34 non-life companies.
