Abstract:   (10 Views)
Audit quality was considered one of the fundamental components of the financial reporting and corporate governance system, and its enhancement could have contributed to increasing the reliability of financial information, reducing information asymmetry, and improving users’ decision-making. Accordingly, this study was conducted to examine the effect of audit firm ranking and audit committee characteristics on audit quality and to investigate the moderating role of audit report lag in these relationships. The audit committee characteristics examined in this study included members’ financial expertise, independence, size, relevant experience, and gender diversity. The study was applied in terms of purpose, quantitative in terms of approach, and descriptive-correlational in terms of research design, and was conducted based on a positivist approach. The statistical population consisted of individuals with relevant accounting and auditing knowledge and experience in companies listed on the Iraq Stock Exchange, and 380 respondents participated in the study as the sample. Data were collected using researcher-developed questionnaires based on a five-point Likert scale. The validity and reliability of the measurement instrument were assessed using convergent and discriminant validity indices, Cronbach’s alpha, and composite reliability. The data were analyzed using SPSS and SmartPLS, and the hypotheses were tested using path coefficients, t-statistics, significance levels, and bootstrap-based interaction effects. The findings showed that audit firm ranking had a positive and significant effect on audit quality (β = 0.485, t = 6.857, p = 0.001). Audit committee characteristics also had a positive and significant effect on audit quality (β = 0.286, t = 3.999, p = 0.001). In contrast, audit report lag had a negative and significant effect on audit quality (β = −0.337, t = 8.883, p = 0.001). The moderation analysis further indicated that the interaction effect between audit firm ranking and audit report lag on audit quality was positive and significant (β = 0.075, t = 2.631, p = 0.001), whereas the interaction effect between audit committee characteristics and audit report lag was not significant (β = 0.047, t = 1.318, p = 0.188). Overall, the findings indicated that improving audit quality in the Iraqi capital market required strengthening the professional capacity of audit firms, enhancing the effectiveness of audit committees, and efficiently managing the timing of the audit process.
