This research aims to investigate the relative importance and causal structure of the five components of the COSO integrated internal control framework within the context of Iran, while testing the measurement validity of each component. Employing a sequential mixed-methods design, the study first validated the indicators of each component through a three-round Delphi technique with 15 experts. In the second step, the causal relationships among the components were analyzed using DEMATEL based on data from the same 15 experts. In the third step, questionnaire data collected from 160 respondents—including faculty members, auditors, and financial managers—were analyzed using Friedman’s test and Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). The results indicate that the final structure comprises 25 sub-criteria across seven main components, successfully retaining the two newly proposed components (Islamic culture and concepts, and social responsibility). Furthermore, the coefficient of determination (R2) for the effectiveness of internal control increased from 0.444 in the baseline framework to 0.504 in the extended framework, demonstrating an enhanced explanatory power. DEMATEL analysis also identified the control environment, Islamic culture, and social responsibility as key driving factors. Ultimately, while the findings strongly support the explanatory capacity of the extended framework, numerical inconsistencies within the manuscript must be reconciled with raw data and software outputs prior to final submission.
